Lola Obscura
I wasn’t supposed to see Lola in the orchard.
As if drawn by the light, she moves deeper between the trees, her bare feet sinking into the cool soil. She kneels slowly, almost reverently, and begins rubbing the earth onto her skin.
She moves through the dark the way wind moves through branches. Warm skin, wet soil, moonlight. A fig splits open in her hands, its dark sweetness running down her wrist.
For a moment she disappears into it all.
The moonlight.
The soil.
